It can be anything, and differs from each people and each time. The career is the whole point, that's fine. (But I want to disagree on this.) The family is the whole point, and that's fine too. You want feel that you are needed? I think this is pretty natural. Asking people "how am I going to live?" can be one of the ways to figure out the point of your life.
But what I thought is that the point changes through out the time, experiences, culture, environment, relationship, and all those things surrounding around you. The point of life can never be permanent.
This is what I thought when I finished watching the movie "up in the air".
